Foot Orthotics

Your foot pain

Feet are complicated mechanical structures. Their function is influenced by the rest of the skeleton above them and the floor below them, therefore the causes and treatments for foot pain are numerous. Most foot and ankle pain is associated with the abnormal functioning of the joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles within the feet and the ankles. The musculoskeletal function of the foot and ankle is also influenced by the function of the rest of the body, such as the spine, hip and knee. In turn the function of the body is influenced by the ground that you walk on and the shoes that you wear. Equally, the way that your foot is working can influence and sometimes even cause pain in the knees, hips and spine.

Foot orthotics

Are devices that are worn in shoes either to change the way the foot works whilst walking or to provide cushioning or support. They are also used to address pains outside of the foot, such as ankle, knee, hip and back pain. Foot orthoses come in all shapes and sizes they can be ready-made or customised insoles or custom made orthoses.

Types of orthotics

  • Ready-made insoles are usually full-length, flat insoles that are selected by shoe size and used for cushioning. This is the most basic type of orthotic that can be used in the treatment of foot problems and so are not recommended in more complex conditions.
  • Ready-made customised orthotics are prescriptive, but not made directly to the shape and specifics or your foot. This type of orthotic is used if the orthotic prescription is not complicated.
  • Custom-made orthoses are the highest grade of foot orthoses available. They are prescriptive and made specifically to the exact shape of the foot and are recommended in more complex conditions.

What we do!

The causes and treatments for foot pain are numerous.

Orthotics can be very effective when prescribed correctly, but they are not appropriate for everyone and can cause more problems if prescribed when they shouldn’t have been.

We can assess your problem and if orthotic therapy would help your condition we can advise on footwear and prescribe and supply either ready made insoles or ready-made customised insoles depending on your need.

If your need is for more complex problem we can advise and refer you appropriately.
