Our Feet

Each of our feet contain 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 120 muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves . These all work together to support the weight of our bodies, act as shock absorbers, keep us balanced, and push us forward with each step.

Both younger and older people can suffer foot problems. But because our feet receive enormous impact equaling many tons of weight a day from our normal daily activities it goes without saying foot problems are more common concerns for the older person.

Ageing feet

Ageing feet tend to loose much of their natural cushioning under the balls of the feet and the heels. The arches get flatter, less flexible and the joints become stiffer and the whole foot shape can change. Because of these changes foot problems can develop. As we age routine nail care can also become more of a challenge or even impossible for us to perform ourselves.

Younger feet

Foot pain in the younger person is a common problem encountered if they are active and play sports. Many injuries are unique to certain sports, whereas others are seen in all types of activity, especially those involving running. Injuries may involve the bones, ligaments, tendons, or other soft tissue structures in the foot.

Foot pain in younger people tends to be caused from aching muscles and stress on bones.

Diabetes and Peripheral arterial disease are common conditions that can put you at risk of foot problems!

Diabetes can cause reduced blood circulation and nerve damage in the feet.

Foot problems can also be caused by poor blood circulation from peripheral arterial disease.

As a Podiatrist Melinda has been trained to be able to diagnose and treat abnormal conditions and problems of the feet and lower limb.
